The T-34 was designed and built by Beech aircraft in the early '50's to meet a military requirement for an inexpensive trainer.   After many years of service in the Air Force and Navy as "A" and "B" models, in the 70's the Navy ordered the "C" model, which is upgraded from the piston 225 HP engine to a PT-6A turboprop engine with greatly enhanced performance.   The "C" model continues to be used by the US Navy today, with gradual replacement by the Texan II trainer as funds become available.
